Updated October 2026.
Short answer: the four Dimplex Ignite XL sizes share the same heater, the same controls and the same overall height and depth (16-1/2" by 5-3/4"). The difference is width, so pick the size by your wall. Every size gives up to 1,000 square feet of supplemental heat, comes with a 120 V power cord or hardwires to 120 V or 240 V, and recesses flush into a 2x6 wall.
- XLF50: 51-3/8" wide overall, for a framed opening 50-5/8" wide.
- XLF60: 61-3/8" wide overall, for a framed opening 60-5/8" wide. This is the 60 inch Ignite XL.
- XLF74: 75-3/8" wide overall, for a framed opening 74-5/8" wide.
- XLF100: 101-3/8" wide overall, for a framed opening 100-5/8" wide.

Overall size from Dimplex's 2026 Ignite XL sell sheet. Viewing area, opening height and heat output from Dimplex's sell sheet for each size, with heat output also in Dimplex's 2024 US Flame catalog. Opening width, wall depth, wiring and box contents from the Ignite XL Installation and User's Guide (7215520100R06), and trim from the guide and the sell sheets. Heating area, controls, outdoor use and warranty from Dimplex's Ignite XL page. Dimplex's documents differ slightly on a few figures: the 2024 catalog gives the viewing height as 11-3/4", and the 2024 catalog lists a narrower width for some sizes (60-1/4" for the XLF60, for example) than the 2026 sell sheet. The owner's manual for your unit governs the installation, so confirm every dimension against it before you frame.
How to choose
- Wall width. Size is the main choice, because all four sizes have the same heat output and controls. Measure the wall and compare it with the overall widths: 51-3/8" for the XLF50, 61-3/8" for the XLF60, 75-3/8" for the XLF74 and 101-3/8" for the XLF100. The framed opening is a little narrower than the overall width, and it is 16" high on every size. Height on the wall matters too: Dimplex says the top of the fireplace must be at least 24" below the ceiling, and its installation guide recommends mounting the bottom between 5" and 40" off the floor for the viewing angle (older Dimplex sell sheets say 30" to 40").
- Install type. In a 2x6 wall, every size recesses flush, and Dimplex says it can go in with or without trim for an edgeless design. The trim in the box is for drywall and tile; Dimplex says the fireplace installs without trim to stone, brick and other solid finish materials. In a 2x4 wall, the fireplace is partly recessed, and Dimplex recommends the XLFTRIM kit for your size, sold separately, to cover the part that sticks out. Dimplex also certifies the Ignite XL for covered outdoor spaces.
- Heat need. A bigger size does not mean more heat. Dimplex lists the same output for all four: 1,500 W (5,118 BTU) at 120 V, or 2,500 W (8,530 BTU) at 240 V, for up to 1,000 square feet of supplemental heat. You can also run the flame with the heat off.
- Electrical. Every size comes with a power cord, and Dimplex says the cord option is only suitable for 120 V installs. For 240 V and the higher 2,500 W output, the fireplace has to be hardwired. Dimplex recommends a dedicated, properly fused 15 amp circuit, says the fireplace is not intended for use with an extension cord, and says the install must comply with local and national electrical codes. Settle on 120 V or 240 V before the wall is closed.
Installing an Ignite XL
- Framing: Dimplex's installation guide gives the framed opening as 50-5/8" wide for the XLF50, 60-5/8" for the XLF60, 74-5/8" for the XLF74 and 100-5/8" for the XLF100, with the fireplace flush in a 2x6 frame or partly recessed in a 2x4 frame. Dimplex's sell sheets give the opening height as 16" and say the bottom sill needs to be at least 3-1/2" deep. The guide also says the fireplace is not load-bearing.
- Two people: the guide says two people are required for installation.
- Height and what goes above it: the top must be at least 24" below the ceiling. For a TV, mantel or artwork above the fireplace, the guide says to follow that item's manufacturer's recommendations for installation over a heater. Its overhang chart marks a zone above the fireplace that can get hotter than 149°F (65°C).
- Keep things back: Dimplex says to keep furniture, pillows, bedding, papers, clothes and curtains at least 3 feet from the front of the fireplace.
- Power: the guide covers 120 V by power cord, wall switch or hardwire, and 240 V by hardwire. It recommends a dedicated, properly fused 15 amp circuit, and a wall switch rated for at least 15 amps if you use one. In a bathroom, the fireplace must be protected by a GFCI receptacle or circuit.
- Covered outdoor installs: the guide says the fireplace must be installed under a shelter, and that to keep warranty coverage the overhang must follow Dimplex's rule: its maximum height no more than 3 times its projection length. It recommends a ground-fault protected circuit.
- Local rules: check with your local building department about permits and inspection before you start.
Dimplex's Ignite XL Installation and User's Guide covers all four sizes. It governs the install, so go by it and by your local code over anything here.
Questions buyers ask
Which Ignite XL is the 60 inch model?
The XLF60. Dimplex lists it at 61-3/8" x 16-1/2" x 5-3/4" overall, with a 58-3/4" x 12-1/8" viewing area and a framed opening 60-5/8" wide. To compare it with the other Dimplex linear fireplaces we carry, see our Dimplex collection.
Does the XLF100 heat more than the XLF50?
No. Dimplex lists the same heater output for all four sizes: 1,500 W (5,118 BTU) at 120 V and 2,500 W (8,530 BTU) at 240 V, with up to 1,000 square feet of supplemental heat. The XLF100 gives you a wider flame, not more heat.
Can I just plug it in?
Yes, on 120 V. Every size comes with a power cord, and Dimplex says the cord option is only suitable for 120 V installs. To run it at 240 V, it has to be hardwired. Dimplex also says not to use it with an extension cord.
Does it have to be built into the wall?
Plan on a built-in install. Dimplex's installation guide covers two installs: flush in a 2x6 frame, or partly recessed in a 2x4 frame. It does not describe hanging the fireplace on the surface of a wall. For a 2x4 wall, Dimplex recommends the XLFTRIM kit for your size (XLFTRIM50, XLFTRIM60, XLFTRIM74 or XLFTRIM100), sold separately. The trim kits are not listed on our store, so call us before you order for a 2x4 wall.
Can I put a TV above it?
Dimplex's guide says to follow the TV maker's recommendations for installation over a heater, and its overhang chart marks a zone above the fireplace that can get hotter than 149°F (65°C). Check that chart in the owner's manual and the TV maker's instructions before you set the height.
Can I use it on a covered patio?
Dimplex says the Ignite XL is certified for covered outdoor spaces. Its guide says it must be installed under a shelter, with an overhang that follows Dimplex's rule to keep warranty coverage, and recommends a ground-fault protected circuit. Dimplex's limited warranty is 5 years indoor and 1 year outdoor.
Is there an app?
No. Dimplex says there is no app connectivity. You use the included remote or the hidden touch controls, and Dimplex lists eight color themes, including White, Red, Blue and Prism cycling modes.
