Who the Homesteader is for

The Homesteader is for people who want to cook and bake on wood: simmer on the stove top, bake in the oven, and keep the kitchen warm while they do it. The thermostatic control is what makes baking practical rather than guesswork.

If what you mainly need is heat, a Buck heating stove is the better match. The Model 21 carries the same 800 to 1,800 square foot rating, includes a blower, is listed at 70 percent efficiency with an EPA tested output, and installs freestanding, as a masonry insert or in a pre-fab fireplace. For more space, see our Buck Stove sizing guide.

What "EPA exempt" means

The EPA's rules for new residential wood heaters exempt cook stoves, as the rules define them, from the wood heater emission limits and certification. "Exempt" is a classification. It is not a measure of how the stove burns.

Before you buy

  • Plan the hearth and chimney from the owner's manual. Clearances to walls, floor protection and chimney requirements are in the Homesteader owner's manual. Call us for a copy before you build.
  • Plan for the weight. It is a heavy stove, over 600 pounds. It ships by freight, so plan how you will move it into place.
  • Check local rules. Ask your local building department about permits and inspection for a new wood stove.
